What exactly do writers do all day when they’re writing?
They disappear for hours on end, sometimes emerging with nothing more than they had when they started. Sometimes they’ve been “surprised by what their characters say” and end up re-writing what they thought was done. Sometimes they get lost in research that will eventually add realism to their story but doesn’t deliver any immediate result.
Yet sometimes, somehow, something new appears. Maybe a paragraph, maybe a chapter, and one day a completed book. Fresh and engaging, something exists that didn’t before, built out of endless days of disappearing to write, the visible emerging from the invisible. How great is that?
